Steps To Starting Your Business:

1. Understand The Process

The best way to get started is to contact an expert in the field – someone to help you understand everything that needs to be done. This person will be able to help you put together a checklist of everything that needs to be done to create the kind of business entity that works best for you. As certified public accountants, we can help you work through some of these first steps. Some considerations include:
  • How many owners will there be?
  • What type of business structure do you need? Options include an LLC, S-Corp, partnership, nonprofit and more
  • In which state will your business be registered?
  • How will your business be taxed, and how will it pay taxes? What taxes will it be responsible for – sales tax, payroll tax, unemployment, etc.?
  • Will you have employees and will you offer benefits?

2. Contact A Business Attorney

An attorney can help you make sure all of the technical requirements for setting up your business are met. While it is possible to take care of these yourself, the best bet to protect yourself and your new business from possible legal or tax troubles is to make sure everything is done correctly from the start – just think of it as your first investment in your business. We are happy to recommend a local attorney to help you get started.
A business attorney can help you with:
  • Secretary of State filings for registering your business & business name
  • Doing business as (d/b/a) filings
  • Federal registrations
  • IRS registration
  • Establishing an EIN number
  • Creating bylaws or partnership agreements
  • Setting up an LLC

3. Open A Bank Account

Once you have your EIN number, you’ll be able to open a bank account in your business’ name. Depending on the type of entity you chose to establish with the guidance of your CPA or attorney, you may be ready to make your initial investment(s) in the company. Your investment is typically used to purchase all of the shares of your company, as established in your company bylaws. Before making your investment, it may be wise to discuss potential tax implications with your CPA.

4. Plan your future with your CPA

Your CPA is the person who makes sure your accounting and filings are taken care of the right way. Your CPA can help you see opportunities for savings, efficiencies and help you utilize the programs and tax opportunities designed to support your business. Let us know what your goals are – whether it’s moving to a bigger office space, starting a 401(k) program for your employees, or investing in new computers, we can help. Through a mix of consulting and accounting services, the CPA will help you streamline your business operations and can help you focus on your business by providing a range of services, including:
  • Bookkeeping
  • Accounting
  • Payroll
  • Financial consulting
  • Account reconciliation
  • Quickbooks Online setup & integration
  • Sales, payroll, estimated, corporate & more tax filings
  • Payroll tax returns
  • Personal tax consultations
